copyrightsU.S. Copyright Office

Your music belongs to you from the moment you create it. You technically don't have to do anything further, but in the event that you need to prove ownership at some point (and certainly to win damages in court) it will be critical that you have a formal registration receipt from the copyright office. This is for the U.S., but you should look into copyright registration in whatever country you reside in for full protection.
